Courier supported host of community events The Evansville Courier has sponsored or supported many events that made an impact on individuals or the community. In 1910 it was the First District Corn Show and Tri-State Corn Exposition, held Downtown. This event was the forerunner of modern farm exhibits and today's 4-H shows. The annual Soap Box Derby and Golden Gloves boxing tournaments meant notoriety and travel for some area boys and young men. Winners of competitive Courier circulation contests earned trips to popular spots in the U.S. - and even Europe - in the early 1900s. And The Courier could take credit for sponsoring The Evansville Auto Show, early county fairs, and seminars and fairs for area women. Courier sports editor Dan Scism's love for golf resulted in Evansville's first City Golf Tournament in 1930. That tournament - won by Dr. R.R. Acre - set the standard for the annual event that continues today. Besides special events, The Courier was remembered for the large electric message sign mounted on The Courier building at 125 Main St. early in the century. The screen flashed ball scores, first election returns, and prize fight results. When the board displayed the first drawing of draft numbers at the onset of World War I, the street was packed with anxious onlookers. The Courier board flashed war events until the fighting was over.
