Evansville boom town by 1920s

When The Evansville Courier observed its 75th anniversary in 1920, Evansville was a virtual boom town.

About 100 new retail establishments had opened their doors. New factories had drawn 20,000 people to the city - and still there wasn't enough manpower to fill the jobs. Evansville had a population of 85,264 and The Courier's circulation was 22,127.

During its 75th year, The Courier printed a full-page cartoon advocating the building of an Evansville-Henderson bridge - a case it had made for decades. The bridge was completed in 1932, finally replacing the old traction ferries, and served as a toll bridge until it was paid off in 1941.

By this time the automobile was rapidly replacing street cars and horse-drawn buggies, and lifestyles were changing. Electricity was becoming more common, hemlines were surprisingly short, and Prohibition had created its own subculture.

Courier owners Henry Murphy, Percy Carroll and Howard Roosa long promoted educational opportunities for area youth and helped to persuade Moores Hill Methodist College to relocate in the city. That institution, renamed Evansville College, came here in 1919 and opened its first new facility - the administration building - in 1922.

The city was desperately short of housing for the thousands who came for jobs, and The Courier devoted much print to that problem and possible solutions.

Tuberculosis still was a public health enemy in 1920. Evansville's Boehne Anti-Tuberculosis Camp on the West Side was considered one of the best tuberculosis hospitals in the state.

Its patients - half of whom were children - were taught the "triangle of health: good food, good rest and open air."
