FDR gave area hope again

The 1932 presidential campaign sparked a ray of hope for weary Americans. While President Herbert Hoover fell from grace in the eyes of the nation, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's campaign song, "Happy Days Are Here Again," dredged up optimism.

The Evansville Courier supported Roosevelt in its editorials, sayi ng that his election "would voice a demand for results in combating economic conditions - a demand for a 'new deal.' " One editorial by Don Scism stated the need for a more liberal government.

A Karl Kae Knecht cartoon of Oct. 26, 1932, illustrated H oover's broken campaign promises in 1928 for "two cars in every garage and a chicken in every pot."

The headline on Nov. 9, 1932, shouted, "Roosevelt Winning in a Landslide!" It was followed by, "Democrats to Win in County by 15,000" and "Republican Defeat by Local Officers Biggest on Record."

The following editions revealed the new president's plans that would put Americans back to work.

During the next six years roads and sidewalks were paved and repaired, ditches were cleared, and old stre etcar tracks were removed from city streets. Women found jobs at sewing and canning plants, and teachers, artists and musicians worked on programs such as concerts and a Christmas parade.

"I got a job at a sewing center for women at First Avenue and F ranklin," Clayetta Risley said. "We earned $32.50 a month - and we were glad to get it."

Local men completed several significant improvements during the Depression. Evansville's Dress Plaza, Burdette Park and the erection of Lincoln Gardens, a 191-uni t housing development, were among them. The work also included clearing the area known as Baptisttown and improvements to schools.
